Los datos globales (entre 70 grados norte y 70 grados sur) se basa en mediciones de SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) y ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer), un instrumento de formación de imágenes a bordo de Terra, el satélite buque insignia de la Tierra de la NASA Observando Sistema.
ASTER es un esfuerzo cooperativo entre la NASA, el Ministerio japonés de Economía, Comercio e Industria (METI) y Space Systems Japón (J-Spacesystems).
