Die globalen Daten (zwischen 70 Grad Nord und 70 Grad Süd) basiert auf Messungen von SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) und ASTER basiert (vorgerücktes raumtüchtiges thermische Emissions-und Reflexions-Radiometer), ein bildgebendes Instrument an Bord Terra, das Flaggschiff Satelliten der NASA-Erdbeobachtungs System.
ASTER ist eine Kooperation zwischen der NASA, das japanische Ministerium für Wirtschaft, Handel und Industrie (METI) und Japan Space Systems (J-spacesystems).
